My ovarian cyst and fertility nightmare

Hi Debbie here. Welcome to my site and my story of my ovarian cysts and fertility.

I would just like to say straight off the bat.
I know what you’re going through! When you read my story you will understand. It all started when I was in my teens, 13 to be precise this is when my nightmare started.

I remember it like it was yesterday 3 or 4 days before my first ever period started I had the most horrendous stomach pains and lower back pain.
I was dizzy & I even fainted twice due to the pain. My mother took me to the doctor and all he said was that my body is changing and i was becoming a woman. I didn’t want to be a woman if this is what you had to go through.

Anyway 3 / 4 days later it was here my first period. I never imagined the pain would be this bad. This went on for 5 days; pains, sweating, tears, and more fainting and not to mention the heavy bleeding.
Back to the doctors I went he explained it was period pains and advised I take paracetamol. Then month after month the same thing nothing changed so I just learnt to live with it.

when I reached 15 some of my school friends were getting excited that their periods were about to start. I would tell them how bad it’s going to be for them, but to my surprise most of them were ok no problems. More months go by still no change, back to the doctors I went are you ready for this?
Now it was down to my weight because I’m overweight I was told to eat healthier this explains my friends having no problems they were all slim.
At 17 yrs old no change, bleeding became heavier and would last 7 days. Now the doctor suggested I go on the pill as this should reduce the bleeding for a few months. This worked but the pain was still as bad as ever as the yrs rolled by I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and was given medication.

But hey hoo the pain was still as bad as when I was 13. In my twenties I became pregnant, I was overjoyed to become a mother and also no more periods. To my surprise I had no pain this was fantastic. 3 months after the birth of my daughter it was back to normal.

A few yrs went by and I became pregnant again with my second child, slthough just after the birth I was rushed into hospital for emergency surgery to remove an ovarian cysts.

After the operation the consultant came to see me and explained that the cyst was the size of a baby’s head and he had also removed my ovary.

He asked if I was considering more children. I was devastated. I wanted more children, he then said there was a lesser chance for me to get pregnant now that the ovary had been removed.
Again my world had fell apart I explained I had these symptoms since my periods started when I was 13 was the cyst the problem? He said it probably was, it had been growing inside me over the years.

After the tears and the soul searching this is where I made a stand I was not going to suffer anymore I was going to sort this out myself. I was going to have more children I had dreamt of having three children I was going to make this happen.

How does the doctor find ovarian cysts?

The doctor will most frequently find ovarian cysts during regular pelvic tests. When the doctor examines you he may feel the swelling of your cysts on the ovary. Once he finds the cyst test are then done to determine which treatment to take. Tests include:

An ultrasound scan. The ultrasound scan is harmless it uses sound waves which then transmits images of the body. Then the doctor can see the cysts.

  • Location
  • Size
  • Shape

Mass to see if it is fluid, solid, or mixed

Pregnancy test. This is just to make sure you’re not pregnant.
Hormone tests. To check hormone levels to check if it is hormone-related
Blood tests. This is done to find out if the cyst is cancerous this is done by checking for a substance in your blood called cancer-antigen 125 or (CA-125). The CA-125 is higher with ovarian cancer there are some ovarian cancers

that don’t create enough CA-125 to be detected by the test. There are some other noncancerous dieses that that create CA-125. Such as: uterine fibroids, endometriosis. Ovarian cancer is very rare in the under 35 age group. The CA-125 test is mainly for women who:

  • are older than 35
  • At high risk for ovarian cancer
  • The cyst is partly solid

How do you treat cysts? In most cases if you are told you have a cyst, the doctor will most likely tell you to wait a couple of months and have a second test in 1 to 3 months. The doctor will then check to see if the cyst has grown or shrank this is the most common option for women who:

  • The cyst is fluid filled
  • Have no symptoms at all
  • Are in childbearing years

This may also be an option for postmenopausal women.

Surgery. The doctor on occasions will want to remove the cyst if you are postmenopausal or if it:

  • Doesn’t go away after numerous menstrual cycles
  • Gets much larger
  • Looks out of shape on the ultrasound
  • Severe pain

The two main surgies are:

Laparoscopy. This is done when the cyst is small and looks noncancerous on the ultrasound. The method used is while under general anaesthesia, a tiny cut is made either below or above your navel. Then a small telescope like instrument is inserted into your abdomen. Your doctor can then remove the cyst without any trouble.

Laparotomy. This surgery is done if your doctor feels that the cyst is large and maybe cancerous. When under general anaesthesia this time larger cuts are made in the stomach to take out the cyst.

The cyst will then be tested for cancer. If the test comes back positive for cancer the doctor will most likely remove the ovary and other tissue. Such as the uterus. NOTE: If only one ovary has been removed this is ok you are still fertile and can still produce estrogen.

Birth control pills. Otherwise known as the pill this is sometimes used for treatment when you keep forming functional cysts. Your doctor may prescribe this to stop you from ovulating when you don’t ovulate you tend not to form new cysts.

Can you stop ovarian cysts?

Short answer no. Most cysts

  • Don’t cause any of the symptoms
  • They disappear on their own
  • Are not cancerous

Talk to your doctor or nurse if you start to get any of these symptoms.

You start to see changes in your period, lower back pain, and pain in the pelvic area or any symptoms of a cyst.

When are you most likely to have ovarian cysts?

During childbearing years is the most common time for most ovarian cysts to occur in most cases these are not cancerous. Women who have gone through the menopause (50-70 yrs) the ovarian cyst has a higher chance of being cancerous.

With that said no matter what age if you think you have a cyst go and see your doctor for a chat and a pelvic exam.

What are ovaries?

The ovaries are two organs in the female reproductive system. They can be found in the pelvis

there is one each side of the uterus. The uterus is a hollow pear-shaped organ where the child starts to grow.

Each one of the ovaries is the size and shape of a peach stone the job of the ovaries is to produce

eggs and female hormones the hormones are chemicals that manage the way certain cells or organs operate.

Each month through a woman’s menstrual cycle, an egg develops inside the ovaries it grows inside a very

small sac which is called a follicle when the egg is fully grown the sac comes apart to release the egg.

The egg will then find its way through the

fallopian tube to get to the uterus so it can begin the fertilization. The sac will then dissolve to become corpus luteum this makes hormones that help get ready for the next egg.

The ovaries are the main organ for the female hormones estrogens and progesterone these are the main hormones that effect the way breast and body hair grow your body shape, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy.

What are ovarian cysts?

A cyst is a sac that is filled with fluid these cysts can develop anywhere in the body. Ovarian cysts (sists) can develop in or on any of the ovaries. The most frequent type of ovarian cyst is a functional cyst.

Functional cysts develop during the menstrual cycle there is two types they are:

Follicle cysts. These types of cysts develop when the sac doesn’t break open and release the egg. Therefore the sac continues to grow. In most cases this cyst will disappear in 1 to 3 months.

Corpus luteum cysts. These types of cysts develop when the sac doesn’t dissolve. What the sac then does is seal off when the egg is released. Then the fluid builds up inside in most cases these cysts will go away after a couple of weeks. They have been known to grow up to 4 inches in size they can bleed and twist the ovary and cause severe pain. They are also rarely cancerous, some of the drugs used to start ovulation such as Clomid or Serophene, can cause the risk of getting these cysts.

Other types of ovarian cysts are:

Endometriomas: These cysts develop in women who have already got endometriosis. This problem happens when the tissue that looks and acts like the lining of the uterus begins to grow outside the uterus. The tissue will attach itself to the ovary and then a growth will appear. With these cysts they can be very painful especially during sex and your period.

Cystadenomas: These cysts form cells on the outside surface of the ovary. On most occasions these cysts are filled with watery liquid or a dense sticky jelly. These then become quite large and very painful.

Dermoid Cysts: The dermoid cyst consists of many different types of cells. It is said that these types of cysts will be filled with teeth, hair, and different tissues all become part of the cyst. Most times these cysts become large and painful.

Polycystic Ovaries: Form themselves when the eggs have fully grown inside the sac but are not released. This then repeats itself the sacs are still growing and so more cysts start to form.

Tips and inspiration

Hi some helpful tips too help you on your journey.

Hundreds and thousands of women that suffer from the pain of ovarian cysts are led to believe that drugs are their only option. The problem with drugs is that they hardly ever work and dont prevent new cysts from growing or rupturing, it just covers up the symptoms.

There are other cures for ovarian cysts, and they don’t just stop the pain for a while they will eliminate them. Some ovarian cysts

will actually disappear just like magic given a bit of time thus surgery is not always a good option. Even more so for women that have persistent ovarian cysts,

there is a stronger desire to make them stop, for good. There are cures for ovarian cysts that can be done at home you can start them immediately, today even and not only will they stop the pain immediately but these methods can help reduce the chance of growing more cysts in the future.

To ease the pain immediately I would use a heating pad gently to the pelvic area. You can also try a hot water bottle to get an immediate effect on controlling the pain and pressure. Immediately start to increase how much fibre and water you eat and drink throughout the day.

The more pressure there is to your stomach the more pain you will get with ovarian cysts. Now you don’t have to be a doctor to get started it most definitely doesn’t require you taking any expensive drugs or worst of all agonizing surgeries to cure your ovarian cysts.

There are so many natural and inexpensive ways for you to treat yourself and stop your pain and the cysts. You can do it all on your own just believe in yourself.

Basic Information About Recurring Ovarian Cysts

When a woman reaches her childbearing years, there are things she’ll learn in regards to reproductive health that she didn’t have any cause to know before, things like pap smears, monthly breast exams, and the menstrual cycle. Another topic she might find herself learning about is ovarian cysts, and recurring ovarian cysts.

To understand the difference between regular ovarian cysts, and recurring ones that cause problems, it’s important to know a little bit about the different types of ovarian cysts.

The basic definition of an ovarian cyst is a collection of fluid surrounded by a thin wall, located within an ovary. Ranging in size, 95% of ovarian cysts are benign, are found in almost all pre-menopausal women, and generally go away on their own.

Pain associated with ovarian cysts is common, and can be treated with at home remedies. Pain relievers like Advil, Motrin and others can help, as well as alternating heat and cold to the lower abdomen.

A warm bath, water bottle, or heating pad can be used for the heat, and ice packs can be used for the cold. Other common treatments include using birth control pills, a method that should be discussed with your doctor, in order to assure that you get the best hormonal contraceptive for treating cysts.

These methods work for the three common types of functional cysts, which for the most part go away on their own. Recurring ovarian cysts are another matter, and often require not only the diagnosis of a doctor, but medical treatment as well.

For example polycystic ovarian syndrome can cause recurring ovarian cysts, although not all women with PCOS have ovarian cysts, and a case of recurring ovarian cysts doesn’t necessarily mean that a woman has PCOS.

This of course is why it’s important to seek the medical advice of a doctor not only for diagnosis of recurring ovarian cysts, but for treatment as well, and these cysts are often caused by an underlying medical condition that will need treated as well.

There are a variety of treatments for ovarian cysts that are recurring, and you should fully discuss all treatment options with your doctor before starting on any, including the ones that he or she might suggest. Some options might include surgery to remove the cysts, and in some cases the ovaries might need removed as well, depending on the situation.

Other options might include a combination of medication and other at home remedies such as those discussed above. In any case, it’s important to understand the risks and benefits of any treatment option, medical or otherwise.

While ovarian cysts are painful and sometimes frustrating to deal with, for the most part they are harmless and go away on their own. If you find yourself continually struggling with pain caused by recurring ovarian cysts, then it’s important to see your doctor.

Other more serious conditions can be caused when harmful cysts are left unchecked, including infertility and ovarian cancer. One of the best ways to take care of your reproductive health is to get yearly pap smears, and to see the doctor whenever pain caused by cysts lasts for more than a week. With proper care, both by you and your doctor, your reproductive health can be monitored, letting you reduce risks to your health.
